The Four Seasons Resort in Sayan near Ubud was built with an illegal building permit issued under the Suharto Government (of course), as it place the 4 Seasons too close to the local Balinese Hindu temple. To this day, the local Balinese picket the hotel to try and disrupt its operation and make it live up to its legal responsibilites. This is one Balinese hotel which, despite its own marketing retoric, is far removed from the interests of the Balinese and their island.
